Randy Taylor Talks: How-to Set - and achieve - your Goals
Written by Sarah Federico
Setting goals as a craft hairdresser can be a tricky endeavor, but – like any other field – if you want to rise to the top, you have to have a strategy. Sometimes a simple plan of attack is the best approach – and nobody knows this better than Randy Taylor, Hairbrained Co-Founder. Here, get Randy’s quick-tips for setting and reaching your goals, so you can get where you want to be – now.
Step 1: Identify your goal. Writing down goals can help remind you of what you’re trying to achieve, but creating a ‘vision board’ might be more effective. For example: If you aim to be an editorial stylist, clip images from artists that you admire. In this way, you can keep your goal in your line of sight, at all times.
Step 2: Spread the word. Don’t keep your goals to yourself! Instead, tell your friends, family and colleagues about your career-related aspirations. This will help with accountability – and while it might be uncomfortable to share your setbacks – you’ll enjoy positive encouragement along the way, too.
Step 3: Set milestones. According to Randy, “the quickest way to success is a straight line” – but that doesn’t mean that you should try to accomplish big goals all at once. Perhaps you want to reach a certain level of productivity within the salon; but you shouldn’t expect to reach your goal overnight. Instead, set small and achievable milestone-markers.
Step 4: Give yourself a deadline. What does this mean, you ask? Give yourself a tangible deadline. For example, if you aspire to educate, tell yourself that you’ll be working either with a company or independently by a certain date – and make it happen.
Step 5: Be realistic. Don’t be afraid to dream big – but don’t set yourself up for failure by setting unattainable (or unlikely) goals
Step 6: Commit to it. Be whole-heartedly committed to your future – and to yourself. Sometimes that means committing and re-committing when you experience set backs, but don’t let that deter you. Your success depends on you.
As you work to achieve your goals, remember: “Having clear intentions, staying focused on the life you want, plus being open minded, is a recipe for success,” finishes Randy.
